I'm always interested in the sources that present day stories pull their myths and folklore from. It took awhile before I was able to recognize the myths behind the manga as Japanese folklore and legends were unfamiliar to me.
My first introduction to anime was Sailor Moon. As a teenager, I watched the first few episodes of Sailor Moon restlessly, with the sense of wtf? This was before the rage of Clueless, Legally Blonde, Buffy and other media in that genre.
The main character was ditzy, dumb, and I wondered how she could be the hero of the story. She got no respect from her allies or her enemies, and that was precisely what made her interesting. Sailor Moon, like Buffy came to grow on me after a few episodes, and I came to respect their unique qualities and the crazy concept of the worlds they lived in.
Everything influences one another, Salior Moon was influenced by Kaguya Hime. And from a single story in a popular Japanese folk tale, a myriad of derivative children were born.
You can read a summary of the original story on the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter/Kaguya Hime/Taketori Monogatari on the wiki or ready the actual story in Japanese with translations here. It's essentially a tale of a Moon Princess that grows up on earth because of a war in heaven. Suitors vie for her hand on earth, but eventually she has to return home.
The premise of Salior Moon is about a long-lost Moon Princess who lives today on earth. With the Planets as her companions, she saves the earth from being taken over by evil aliens.
From there, Sailor Moon influenced Buffy The Vampire slayer by way of Fran Rubel Kuzui who loved the Sailor Moon story and was one of the script writers on Buffy.
From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to all it's many derivatives, all of which can be traced back to a single folk tale. That's interesting isn't it? Studio Ghibli has recently announced their intent to create an anime of the story Kagua Hime. I'm greedily awaiting its arrival.
Can anyone share names of other works that are based on Tale of the Bamboo Cutter/Kaguya Hime/Taketori Monogatari?
